    School Profile

Westminster School is located in the community of Glenora. We welcome students from our direct feeder schools - Glenora, Coronation, Grovenor, Westglen and Oliver. We excel at combining academics, arts, athletics and real life experiences for our students and as a result, we also welcome Grade Seven to Nine students from all over the City of Edmonton in the delivery of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP), in which our Regular Program, and two District Special Needs Programs - Strategies and Behaviour Learning Assistance reside.

Westminster exists to create a safe space for students to find out who they are and flourish into who they are meant to be. We provide rich and fullfilling experiences for students, coupled with academic discipline and community involvement. Students leave Westminster feeling challenged, respected and valued, and confident.

We are Inclusive. Everyone belongs. Everyone is valued.

We Build Character. Kind, compassionate, and empathetic students.

  • IB Program

    IB Program

    ‌Mission Statement of the IBO

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.  To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.  These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life-long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) curriculum aims to:

    • promote responsible global citizenship and encourage international-mindedness
    • encourage a positive attitude to learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness and participate actively in their communities
    • reflect real life by allowing students to se the connections among the subjects themselves and between subjects and real issues
    • support the development of communication skills - inquiry, understanding, language acquisition, reflection and expression
    • emphasize, through the learner profile, the development of the whole child - physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and ethically
    • Provide students with the skills to act collaboratively and become critical and reflective thinkers

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) is a four year program designed for students between the ages of eleven and sixteen or in grades 6 to 9. The age group for which the program is intended represents a critical stage in a student’s personal and intellectual development. For many students, it is a time of uncertainty, heightened sensitivity and susceptibility, as well as a time for questioning many aspects of their life in the world around them. The IBMYP responds by providing a disciplined, yet open, approach with challenging standards. The program provides opportunities for students to develop skills and to exercise creativity, thereby encouraging them to become responsible, self-reliant and participating members of society.

Year One of the IBMYP is offered at both Westglen and Glenora Schools.

Year Two, Three and Four of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP)  is offered at Westminster School. A student does not have to take Year One of the IBMYP to register at Westminster School. We accept students into Year Two without any previous IB programming.

Coronation School is a International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) and offers IBPYP to students in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

At the core of Westminter's Pedagogy is the IB Learner Profile. Regardless of our students' strengths and challenges, we believe that the IB Learner Profile is applicable to ALL of our students. Every student is worthy of an IB education. We facilitate an environment where each and every student can be:

    Inquirers
    Knowledgeable
    Thinkers
    Communicators
    Principled
    Open-Minded
    Caring
    Risk-Takers

    Registration

    2019 -2020 Pre-Enrolment and Registration

    Enrolment Limits

Westminster School has a pre-determined number of spaces for students in the school, certain classes, and/or specific programs. Limiting the number of students who can attend helps the school maintain excellent teaching and learning conditions for members in our learning community.

    • We have a maximum enrolment limit of 535 students for the entire school.
    • We have an optimal enrolment limit of 175 students in Grade Seven.

    Guaranteed Access to Westminster School

    • Students residing in the the Westminster Attendance Area have guaranteed access to the school.
    • Students who are currenlty in the IBMYP and/or the IBPYP at Westglen, Glenora and Coronation have guaranteed access to the school.
    • Grade Six students who have a sibling currenltly attending Westminster School and will continue attending in either Grade 8 and/or Grade 9 in 2019-2020.

    Random Selection

Some schools don't have enough space for all students who want to attend. If the number of students who want to attend a school or program exceeds the space available, new applicants from outside the school's designated attendance area (but within the City of Edmonton), are chosen by random selection.

Should the number of Grade Six students requesting space at Westminster School for Grade Seven exceed 175 students, a random selection will occur. The random selection process is conducted by District Administration to ensure that all students are provided equal opportunity to attend the school and/or program.

A Place for Everyone

At Westminster, we envision a holistic approach to education. Combining academics, arts, athletics and real life experiences, we seek to create equal opportunities for all of our students. Every student has a voice. Every student has a unique story to tell. Westminter is place for everyone.

Principal's Message

Our Open House on Tuesday, March 5th was awesome! We were beyond excited to host our future Warriors in our building and have them feel the Westminster vibe. We are so proud of the community we have cultivated at Westminster. The culture we foster at Westminster focuses on creating an atmosphere that is safe, caring, studios, fun, exciting, challenging, and community-oriented. For Westminster, we believe in educating the whole child. Our learning model is built on our four pillars of academics, arts, service and athletics. As one of only two junior high schools in Edmonton Public to offer the IB Middle Years Programme, we take education to heart. Academic excellence is certainly part of this, but not at the detriment of developing other important life skills like leadership, giving back, and mental and physical wellness.

At the core of Westminter's pedagogy is the IB Learner Profile which is built on high standards of student work, behaviour, community involvement, and school spirit. Informed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) mission to develop active, compassionate and lifelong learners, the IB programme fosters a distinctive set of attributes. These qualities — embodied in the IB learner profile — prepare all of our students to make exceptional contributions to the community and be well-rounded humans.

Every year when our new Grade Seven students walk through the doors of our school, we begin a new 3-year vision, one where they leave Westminster in Grade 9 ready to tackle high school and the next challenges in their journey through education and life. Regardless of academic standing or ability, no matter the program a Warrior is registered in, our safe environment for self-discovery enables students to excel and produce their best results - something they are proud to share with their classmates, friends and parents. Want to feel inspired? Watch our video that encapsulates the incredible atmosphere of learning and self-exploration available to all of our students.

For Westminster, we know that junior high is either an experience young people merely survive, or it is a time when they begin to truly thrive. And we are so honoured to invite you to come thrive with us at Westminster. Westminster is #somethingforeveryone. Be sure to check us out on Instagram @westminsterwarriorsjh and Twitter @westminsterJH.
