    School Profile

    Westminster School is located in the community of Glenora. Although our designated attendance area is defined between the North Saskatchewan River and 107 Avenue and from 109 Street to 149 Street, we serve Grade Seven to Nine students from all over the City of Edmonton in the delivery of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP), our Regular Program, and two District Special Needs Programs - Strategies and Behaviour Learning Assistance.

    Westminster exists to create a safe space for students to find out who they are and flourish into who they are meant to be. We provide rich and fullfilling experiences for students, coupled with academic discipline and community involvement. Students leave Westminster feeling challenged, respected and valued, and confident.

    ‌Mission Statement of the IBO

    The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.  To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.  These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life-long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be righ
    The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) curriculum aims to:
    • promote responsible global citizenship and encourage international-mindedness
    • encourage a positive attitude to learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness and participate actively in their communities
    • reflect real life by allowing students to se the connections among the subjects themselves and between subjects and real issues
    • support the development of communication skills - inquiry, understanding, language acquisition, reflection and expression
    • emphasize, through the learner profile, the development of the whole child - physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially and ethically
    • Provide students with the skills to act collaboratively and become critical and reflective thinkers

    The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) is a four year program designed for students between the ages of eleven and sixteen or in grades 6 to 9. The age group for which the program is intended represents a critical stage in a student’s personal and intellectual development. For many students, it is a time of uncertainty, heightened sensitivity and susceptibility, as well as a time for questioning many aspects of their life in the world around them. The IBMYP responds by providing a disciplined, yet open, approach with challenging standards. The program provides opportunities for students to develop skills and to exercise creativity, thereby encouraging them to become responsible, self-reliant and participating members of society.

    Year One of the IBMYP is offered at both Westglen and Glenora Schools.

    Year Two, Three and Four of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP)  is offered at Westminster School. A student does not have to take Year One of the IBMYP to register at Westminster School. We accept students into Year Two without any previous IB programming. 

    Coronation School is a International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) and offers IBPYP to students in Kindergarten to Grade 6.

    At the core of Westminter's Pedagogy is the IB Learner Profile. Regardless of where our students fit academically, we believe that the IB Learner Profile is always applicable. We facilitate an environment where each and every Westminster student can be:

    Subject Requirements

    Every student in the IBMYP will study eight subject disciplines. These include:

    1. Language A (at Westminster this is English Language Arts)
    2. Language B (at Westminster we offer French and Spanish)
    3. Mathematics
    4. Science
    5. Humanities (Social Studies which includes History and Geography)
    6. Arts (includes one of Music, Drama, and/or Art)
    7. Physical Education
    8. Design (choices may include Computer Studies, Food Studies, Construction, Drafting and Design, Environment Outdoor Education, Mechanical Studies, Film Exploration)

    WELCOME TO ALL OF OUR NEW WARRIORS! We are excited to share that all Grade 7 students for the 2017-2018 school year have been accepted. If you expressed interest in the IBMYP and have not yet received a confirmation, please contact Mrs. Vargo and/or Mr. Bell to confirm your placement.

Principal's Message

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2016 - 2017 school year at Westminster Junior High School!  At Westminster School, we want every student to know that they have the ability to become whoever they want to be. 

We have high expectations. We expect every student to show up, to be thougtful, and engaged. We strive to bring out the best in every kid. 

Our goal is to challenge our students academically and socially. The Westminster experience is built on high standards of student work, behaviour, community involvement, and school spirit, with time to embrace life's lighter moments. We are a dynamic place to learn, grow and have fun. 

Our students’ learning and development are influenced by the key systems of their lives – family, school, friends, and community. We engage all faculty, students, and families in working together as a learning community that is dedicated to caring and support, active participation, and positive expectations for all students. Our District’s cornerstone values of equity, collaboration, integrity and  accountability are foundational to the strong relationships we forge with our community.

We want inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people with adaptable skills to tackle society’s complex challenges and who will help to make it a better, more peaceful world.
